How to File Taxes for Free in 2026 Even Though IRS Direct File Is Gone

There have been some changes in how people in the U.S. can file their taxes for free in 2026. The IRS Direct File system, which allowed many people to file their returns online for free, has been shut down for the 2026 tax season.

Around 300,000 people used this service last year, but now the Treasury Department wants people to use private companies instead.

Even with this change, you still have several ways to file your taxes without paying anything. Here are your main choices for 2026:

IRS Free File Program

  • Who can use it: If your household income (adjusted gross income, or AGI) is less than $84,000, you can use this service.
  • How it works: The IRS partners with private companies to help you prepare and file your federal tax return online for free.
  • Keep in mind: Filing your federal taxes is free, but you might have to pay if you also need to file state taxes.

Other Free Tax Filing Options

If you make more than $84,000 a year or want something different, consider these options:

  • FreeTaxUSA: You can file your federal tax return online for free, no matter your income. There is a flat fee (currently $15.99) if you need to file state taxes.
  • Free File Fillable Forms: Offered by the IRS, this service lets you fill out your tax forms online for free, with no income limit. However, it does not provide guidance or help, so it's best for people who already know how to do their taxes.
  • MilTax: This is a free service for military members, veterans in their first year of retirement, and their families, provided by the Department of Defense.
