Big Updates to the Green Card Application Starting February 2025
Starting February 10, 2025, people who want to live permanently in the United States will see some big changes in how they apply for a Green Card.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is making these changes to make things simpler and faster. Here’s what’s new:
1. A Fresh Form to Fill Out
From February 10, 2025, only the latest version of the Green Card application form, known as Form I-485, will be accepted. This version has been available since October 24, 2024.
If you use an old form, your application won’t be looked at, so make sure to use the right one!
2. A Must-Do Medical Check-Up
Another key change is that everyone must get a medical exam before they apply. This is to show you’re in good health and have all the necessary vaccinations.
You’ll need to fill out a form called I-693 to prove you’ve had this check-up after December 2, 2024. It’s a good idea to arrange this exam early to avoid delays.
3. Saying Goodbye to an Old Form
The form called I-864W is no longer required. Before, you needed this form to skip a step proving you’d have financial support in the U.S.
Now, this step is included in the new version of the I-485 form, making one less form to worry about.
4. Clearer Money Questions
USCIS has also made questions related to financial support (public charge) clearer on the new Form I-485. This is to help applicants understand the requirements more easily and speed up the review process.
5. A New Look for the Form
The layout of the Form I-485 has been rearranged, and the instructions are more detailed. This should help people avoid mistakes and make the whole application process smoother.
Preparing for the Changes
If you’re planning to apply for a Green Card, make sure you:
- Use the updated Form I-485. This is crucial, as old forms will be rejected after February 10, 2025.
- Schedule your medical exam early. Don't wait until the last minute, as you need this before you apply.
- Get help if you need it. If you’re not sure about anything, it might be helpful to talk to a professional, like an immigration attorney.
Understanding Fees and How Long It Takes
Applying for a Green Card costs around $2,000 to $5,000, depending based on your application type.
Applying for a Green Card can take 6 to 24 months, depending on various factors.
Who Can Apply?
You can apply if you:
- Are a close relative of a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Are a skilled worker with a job in the U.S.
- Are a refugee or seeking asylum.
- Qualify under humanitarian programs.
Each group has specific requirements, so check what documents you need carefully.

Why These Changes Are Important
In the fiscal year 2023, over 1.2 million people applied for a Green Card. These updates aim to make the whole process more efficient and transparent, reducing wait times and making it easier for people to get their applications through.
To stay up-to-date and avoid any surprises, keep an eye on the official USCIS website for any more updates. By getting ready for these changes now, you can make your journey to living permanently in the U.S. a bit smoother.
