Amazon Prime Settlement Update: Bigger Refunds and Automatic Cash On the Way
Good news if you were ever tricked into an Amazon Prime subscription or struggled to cancel it! According to a recent FTC press release, the Federal Trade Commission has revised its agreement with Amazon to expand payouts and simplify the refund process for millions of shoppers.
The updated court order expands on the landmark September 2025 settlement that required Amazon to pay $1.5 billion in consumer redress alongside $1 billion in civil penalties. As of September 2026, the retail giant has already distributed more than $845 million to affected customers.
Under the initial terms, maximum payouts were capped at $51 and limited to consumers who used 10 or fewer Prime benefits over a one-year period. The new expansion increases the maximum payout cap to $200 and covers consumers who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits.
Starting October 1, 2026, newly qualified consumers will automatically receive payouts without having to fill out a single claim form. Payments will be sent directly via digital options like Venmo or PayPal, or through a mailed physical check.
If overall payout thresholds are not met by February 2027, Amazon will issue an additional automatic payment of up to $149 starting by April 2027. This bonus round brings total potential compensation to $200 for consumers who received initial payments.
To protect yourself from potential scams, keep in mind that the FTC will never reach out directly or ask for personal financial information regarding this settlement. Official updates and information on how the redress program is administered can be reviewed on the official FTC Amazon Refund Page.
